On August 2nd of this year, a three person team, including our Task Force Leader, arrived in Kosovo to help improve the urban search and rescue capabilities of their US & R task force. The team will conduct rope, confined space, trench, and structural collapse rescue technician courses as well as basic SAR skills over the next few weeks, and will then put all the basic skills learned into large-scale multi-disciplinary exercises. The Kosovo Security Forces (KSF) team has been absolutely fantastic. A core of well trained, experienced instructors will conduct the actual teaching for 120 untrained personnel, and a cadre of about 20 people will be drawn from these untrained personnel to carry on training after the training team leaves. The contract was originally until October 26th, but an extension until the 20th of December has been requested.
SAR Day 2013 was a huge success! A total of 78 personnel from 16 different agencies and 4 states attended this year. Training in rope rescue, confined space rescue, breaching concrete in a confined space, breaching concrete while suspended by ropes, saw cutting concrete, shoring and K-9 training for both live and deceased victims as well as training both K-9s and personnel in lowering K-9s from 60 feet took place.
